How do you let people treat you? Do you remain silent when abused? Do you feel that you deserve dirty looks and disdainful words? Do you fear to speak up and let others trample over you in crowds because you feel inferior? If so then pay attention. You deserve respect. My mother has said over and over to me and others that "you cannot love what you do not respect." Respect has become taboo in our society. People tend to be very independent and thus less considerate of others. However, the greatest danger is a lack of self-respect. It is quite a bizarre experiance when you find greater support, care, and understanding from the secular world than the Church. The institution has failed. A mass exodus is taking place. People are not leaving the faith, they are leaving the community. Christians in the Church system have failed to be relevant to their own congregations. Believers are finding better aid in secular institutions. An example is my own experience. I have gone to Church all my life and sat in a pew almost perpetually. I cannot tell you that any person at any Church I have attended really knows me or that I know them. Everything is obscured and no one seeks to get personal. In stark contrast when I attended an Renaissance Faire, strangers knew a great deal about me. I wore my Crusader armor, tunic, and sword . One dynamic of the Crusades that is often overlooked is the couple. Spouses were frequently separated when husbands "took the cross" and marched for Palestine. The wives were left with a choice; join their Crucinatius (Crusader) husbands or remain behind to tend to their lands. Some women joined in the arduous journey and put themselves at great peril to remain with their husbands. Others fearing the failure of the expeditions to the East stayed and waited with great longing for their beloved's return. In the painting I've chosen for this post you can see a two fold expression. First there is the Crusader, the brash youth offering his sword to the Lord and looking at the altar with awe in his eyes. I've had an epiphany about God. In some churches God is depicted as a person who wants us to evolve or adapt into something we aren't in order to do his work on Earth. God becomes that Boss that we hide aspects of ourselves around because it could effect our employment or in this case salvation or a seat of honor in Heaven. God is seen by the world in this way as an overlord who demands service and a purging of our own desires. The truth is completely contrary. God because of this wrongful image has become unlikable. People have made God this ogre who wants to crush you because of your sins and even though he died and rose again, you still need to do penances to appease his wrath or avoid his disapproval. There are only two types of people in this world: controllers and caregivers. Controllers seek to dominate, manipulate, and enforce their will over others. They seek to maintain their equilibrium of happiness at the expense of their friends, family, and fellow co-workers. Caregivers in contrast seek to serve through facilitating, networking, and enabling a collective will or collaborative desire. Caregivers seek to create an equilibrium for the whole, for everyone including themselves. They are servants instead of slave drivers, but they are not co-dependent. Caregivers are interdependent, meaning they depend on others but also maintain their independence. They don't become a drone to the desires of others and they don't dominate people with their desires. In every family you will find controllers and caregivers. On a daily basis we are bombarded by images of darkness. Books, movies, music, and video games have been carefully constructed to teach people of all ages to emulate evil. The hero or good guy has been swept under the rug and in his place the anti-hero has taken his throne. What is deemed popular or cool is a character who inflicts pain on the innocent or who demonstrates his power through sadistic means. As Christians we are called to "mediate on that which is good and of good report." (Philippians 4:8). Our baser nature desires to see these shadows and sinners. Many of us fail to make a "covenant with our eyes, (Job 31:1)" and flock to the cinema to see things we wouldn't dare watch if Christ were at our side.
