“I Desire Mercy..”

We as a creation are more keen to make sacrifices than show mercy. It is much easier for us fo pick and choose something to give up for God than to extend and stretch ourselves to be merciful. Sacrifice for us is very selfish, we choose the terms and tell Christ what we shall offer, but mercy requires of us the uncomfortable trio of loving our enemy, forgiving, and pardoning. Our Lord Jesus made a Sacrifice of Himself but it was for mercy’s sake. We were doomed by sin to remain in hell, Abaddon (inferno) or Abraham’s bosom (purgatorioesque); in both cases we separated from God. But then God did the incredible! He emptied hell and nailed our sins of separation to the cross and destroyed both Abaddon and Abraham’s Bosom’s claims to us! We now have eternal life and heaven! (John 3:16, John 6:40, Revelation 21:1-4).Hallelujah!   Christ did the most unselfish thing, He lowered Himself and died for us, His sacrifice being the ultimate mercy (sparing us from what we deserve) and giv

Advent Traditions

Sunday, December 2nd, marks the beginning of Advent. For many Adventus is a period of preparing for Christmas, the celebration “of our dear Savior’s Birth.” (O Holy Night Hymn).   Advent starts the first Sunday of December and culminates on Christmas Eve. Some brothers and sisters mark Adventus by fasting or abstaining from something, examples being lattes or certain foods or TV, much in the same way Lentintide  (lent) fasting works, and in place of what they give up they pray, mediate on Scripture and spend time with the Lord. Others buy an advent wreath or circlet with four candles, three purple and one white, each which are lit on Sundays in Advent and on Christmas Day.  There are many Advent traditions and whichever draws your heart more into His Spirit this season is worthy “and of good report.” (Philippians 4:8). For myself, the Medieval Readings of Scripture is how I will celebrate. In the Middle Ages the Church read on Sundays in Advent the passages of Christ’s Second

Apocalyptic Blues: How Eschatology is Effecting Our Church

“Free Spirit Conservatory,” , Anna Marie Horner  The Study of End Times and End Things, Eschatology, is perhaps the most prominent field of study next to Theology and Evangelism (Missiology). What is clear is that Eschatology is the most divisive topic in Christendom today. Brothers and sisters who agree Jesus Christ is the Son of God and died for their sins on the cross and rose from the dead are split asunder over end times views ranging from Pre Millennial to Post Millennial, from Pre-Tribulation to Post Tribulation and everything in between. The End Times is such a hair raising and tense subject that many either choose to become dogmatic in their view and assert its truth with autocratic zeal or they choose the  non-committal view of “Revelation, in the end we win. Enough said.”  The polarizing effect eschatology has on the church has made me come to the conclusion that what The Law and Talmud (commentaries on the Law) is for Old Testament Jews, Eschatology is to New Test

Homeless For the Holidays

During my travels, I have met many people who are business execs and CPAs who are homeless. They get out of their car, put on a suite, and go to work. I imagine there are many who are going to be homeless for the holidays, including myself. While I face my first Christmas in a car, I think of our homeless Christian brothers and sisters who are African,  Arabian, Asian, Armenian, Brazilian, Egyptian, Syrian, Iranian, Iraqi, Israeli/Palestinian, Chinese, Greek, Georgian, Indian, European (UK,England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Germany, Swedish, and etc) Swiss, Norwegian, Icelandic, Latvian, Russian, Ukrainian,  Polish, Hispanic, Puerto Rican, Malaysian, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, North Korean, North American (USA),  South American, and any person who has been put out of their community for converting to Christianity or who faces homelessness around the world. I want to mention of our African Christian refugees in Nigeria fleeing persecution and murder. While I face being homeless i

The Trancended God Descended

The Lord God is transcendent. He is omnipotent (all powerful), omniscient (all-knowing, Colossians 2:2-3),and  omnipresent (present everywhere). We His creation are inferior. We cannot fully grasp His omnibrain, nor judge His endless wisdom and power. The Lord is above and beyond us, and many churches even endeavor to leave it that way, ignoring the incredible fact that God decided to descend, to take on human flesh and blood (John 1:1-21) and walk among us, be touched by us (John 20:27), and achieve salvation and intimacy with us:  The Transcendent God did not stay beyond our reach, He became meek and even a baby (Matthew 1 and 2, Luke 1 and 2), He ate (Matthew 9:10) and suffered hunger (Matthew 4:1-11), He felt the ire and indifference of people, and He died a criminals’s death for our sins on the cross though He was innocent. At the cross, the curtain came crashing down (Matthew 27:48-51) and “we may now enter into the holiest place by the blood of Jesus.” (Hebrew

The Dangers of Unthankfullness

Giving thanks does not come natural to Western 21 Century Christians. So often the affluenza (affluence) trap of believing we deserve all our blessings ensnares us; that we some how are guaranteed prestige and wealth because we follow Christ. Well Our Lord Jesus actually has a rebuke to this attitude, “Write this letter to the angel of the church in Laodicea. This is the message from the one who is the Amen—the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s new creation: “I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth! You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by y

Staying in Grace

What keeps me From becoming Catholic despite my love for crucifixes and cathedrals is weakness. The Roman Catholic Church with all the glamor and opulence loses its luster when it demands acts of penance. Our Catholic cousins believe they can be saved by good works and God’s grace, even though St. Peter said, “And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them, by giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us, and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith. 10  Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? 11  But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.” (Acts 15:7-12)

“‘‘Tis the Season, What’s the Reason?”

The Christmas Creep, a phenomenon where Xmas decorations and advertising comes sooner and sooner every year, is in full effect. This year Christmas invaded before Halloween, and although I boycott the All Hallow’s Eve (Halloween) because of its Day of Dead, Occultic, and Crypto-Catholic roots; I still was not thrilled to see evergreen trees and chestnuts on an open fire at the same time as pumpkins and while the leaves are still turning! The Christmas Creep was first recognized widely in a Charlie Brown episode where Charlie Brown goes to a mall and finds a sign saying “only 262 days till Christmas,” and much to Charles’ chagrin there was already Christmas gifts and paraphernalia being advertised.  Each year Christmas creeps earlier and earlier. Hallmark Channel even has “Christmas in July,” where they show reruns of their beloved Xmas classics during the month of July! All the holly so early has made the Holy and special nature of this holiday fade. The commercialization of C
