The world Occult means “hidden” or “secret.” It generally is the seeking of mysteries and powers through magical means. Jesus Christ our Lord ]made it clear that He was not an occultist, “Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret.” (John 18:20). There is a heretical sect known as Gnostic Christianity that claims to know secret knowledge, which makes it occult by definition and Jesus clearly rebukes this in the Apocalypse, “But the rest of you in Thyatira have not followed this evil teaching; you have not learned what the others call 'the deep secrets of Satan.' I say to you that I will not put any other burden on you..” (Revelation 2:24). And that is exactly was Occultism is, evil teachings and deep secrets of Satan. In almost all the high occultic traditions and even demonic powers the serpent is a focus.
In Egyptian Occult the top powers are Anaconda, Cobra, and Python; the Pharaohs had Cobra on their caps and Python in wrapped around their scepter. Mercury the god, through really a fallen angel, uses his sword of twin serpents to defeat the demon of infirmity called Argos, which is probably where Bronze Serpent in the Wilderness that Moses erected overlapped with to make the Medical Symbol. Lilith who is according to the Prophet Isaiah, “Lilith (the night demon) shall find rest in the desert,” (Isaiah 34:14) is a high demon of chaos, the first succubus and first vampire in Gilgamesh; one of her chief symbols is a black serpent. Ouroboros, a serpent that is devouring itself represents Alchemic Occultic teaching on life, death, and rebirth. Gnosticism or Gnostic Christianity, the heresy teaches the serpent in Garden is a liberator. In Wiccan serpents are used to represent Hekate, a serpent goddess of the Greeks and Celtic deity that functions similar to Ouroboros. Kabala Occultism, the serpent is both the symbol of corruption and hidden holiness, again hidden is the word occult. The Hebi or serpent in Japan folklore and occult is seen a powerful being of transmutation, fertility, divine power, and water, which is one four Taoist elements of alchemic and Chi power. In West African Voodoo Occultic practice, the serpents or Dhn-Gbi represents bliss in this life and wisdom as well as water spirits like Mama Wata.
Almost every culture has a serpent tied to the Occultic and magical practices of people and no wonder for the Scriptures say, “The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.” (Revelation 12:9). Notice aside form Satan the Serpent, it mentions his angels, which also are called serpents, hence why St. Patrick in Ireland is known for getting rid of serpents, that is angels of evil, for serpent in Hebrew is Seraph, which is a singular for Seraphim, a type of angel in the Bible. So accurately, these occults having a serpent as major component and aspect of their magics helps identify it as Satanic and involved with the fallen angels that fell with the devil.
The Occult at its core is antichrist, it seduces people with promise of hidden and secret knowledge when all knowledge is in Christ, “Christ, in whom is all the storehouses of knowledge and wisdom.” (Colossians 2:2-3). The Occult is also the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, it is the same lie from Satan the Serpent that says, “if you eat of this you will become like God.” (). It the promise of serpent that secret knowledge will come to you if you seek the paths of occult, but in truth like python, you will get tied up in the dark powers and be suffocated by these depths of Satan, “But I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not uphold this teaching and know nothing of the so-called deep secrets of Satan: on you I will place no further burden,” (Revelation 2:24, NAB). As Christians we are not to participate in fruitless deeds of darkness, but are called to expose them, “Do not participate in the useless deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;” (Ephesians 5:11).
Christ did not teach occult or hidden wisdom, all that He taught and essentials for a disciple to know is laid open, and understandable in The Scriptures. There is not secret initiation rites like the Free Masons, you simply get Baptized in Public to profess your faith in Jesus. Notice baptism is done publicly or it doesn’t count, while occult as the word means is “secret” or “hidden” and its societies keep knowledge and rites hidden.
There is blurring of lines with the resurgence of bizarre Medieval Christian Witchcraft. There are even so called Christian Witches and Occultists now. Make no mistake though, they are hated by Jesus [following two verses are Red Letter, Jesus’ own words], “I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were one or the other! So because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to vomit you out of My mouth!,” (Revelation 3:6), and “No one is able to serve two masters. For either he will hate the one and he will love the other, or he will hold to one and he will despise the other. You? are not able to serve God and mammon [Satan, see Ezekiel 28:16 ‘became violent in your commerce,’ and its clear its an angel because it says ‘O Guardian Cherub,’ Cherub is singular for Cherubim which are angels in Ezekiel Chapter One].” (Matthew 6:24). The Apostle Paul expounds on this by saying, “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons (devils).” (1 Corinthians 10:21). Occult is the doctrine of demons, “Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings (doctrines) that come from demons.” (1 Timothy 4:1). This is why we are seeing an uptick in occult all over the world as people get involved in Tarot, Covens, and all manner of magics. In fact, it is going to be forerunner of the Antichrist himself, “The coming of the lawless one (Man of Sin, Antichrist, Beast of the Sea) will be in accordance with the activity of Satan. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie,” (2 Thessalonians 2:9).
As Christians it behooves us to stay away from all occult no matter what form. I even urge you stay away from it in entertainment, because those involved in the “activity of Satan,” and the “depths of Satan,” use books, movies, television, music, and etc to get people interested in their secret ways! So beware, Anime and Video Games are especially full of occult, movies too as well as shows! We must not be beguiled, for this is not a case of you may stain your shirt, you may stain your soul and Jesus warns, “Don't be afraid of people. They can kill you, but they cannot harm your soul. Instead, you should fear God who can destroy both your body and your soul in hell,” (Matthew 10:28(, “Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Leave Me, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels (demons)” (Matthew 25:41), and “Then the devil, who had deceived them, was thrown into the fiery lake of burning sulfur, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the (Lamb’s, Jesus’) Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:10, 15). These verses are warning that if you play with the occult as Christian you will burn with the devil’s people in the lake of fire. So have nothing to do with esoteric, secret, hidden, magical, and other arts of the occult! Amen.
