The Judas Spirit is a betrayer spirit. It’s characteristics is that it is someone close to you, that you thought you could trust and loved, and they eventually become a traitor. This spirit is probably one of most invidious, because you as a Christian thought the person among you was a dear and close friend, and they turn out not to be. The Judas Spirit can be in Christians, because Judas who was a disciple of Jesus our Lord, he saw great miracles, and even was given powers of the Holy Spirit (Luke 9:1). A Judas cannot be spotted easily at the onset, because one of the ways it operates is that it is in a person you thought loved you, even a spouse potentially. As a result this spirit has an impact unlike others and you find yourself like our Lord saying, “Judas, you betray me with a kiss?” (Luke 22:48).
Something though that differs from how the Judas spirit operated in time of Antiquity and this modern age was that even Judas was repentant, and remorseful, “When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders” (Matthew 27:3). He gave back the thirty pieces of silver, and then hung himself. In contrast, today people who have the Judas spirit in them do not do this, they go to Reddit, YouTube, and other sources to validate their betrayal, coaxing themselves to believe that it is not being traitor, and destroying another person is alright. Instead of like Judas shouting, “I have sinned,” he declared, “for I have betrayed an innocent man,” (Matthew 27:4), judases today are convinced that they are in the right, the post modern ideals of “every individual is right,” has stoked egos to the point that now people never have that epiphany that they destroyed an innocent person. Instead they find support groups telling them they were right to destroy someone, or those urging them to do it!
People now ghost people on a scale that is incredible! (Old sense of the word). People plot how to destroy people with Reddit people, and even ChatGPT. There is no remorse, no sense that they have destroyed an innocent, instead it is utter justification of their evil. That is because the spirit of Judas is actually Satan, “Then Satan entered into Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve disciples,.” (Luke 22:3). We are told that anyone who refuses to believe in Jesus is a potential Judas, “You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God.” (Ephesians 2:2). Satan is a traitor, a liar, and murderer, “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44). The Judas spirit is not some demon, or legion, or even principality, it is the prince of darkness himself, and he is never content in destroying people. The problem is if your friends are nonbelievers they are already filled with him (Ephensians 2:2), but even in Christians he can gain access like he did Judas Iscariot, and a person can become Satan, “Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” (Matthew 16:23). The Apostle Peter there allowed his mouth to become the devil’s mouth. So it is evident that the Judas spirit, really Satan, is able to step into a Christian and non Christian alike by them plugging into concerns of this world, specifically bitterness and jealousy, “But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.” (James 3:14-16). To break from that cycle you have to obey God, submit to him, “submit to God and resist the devil and he shall flee.” (James 4:7). You have to be disciplined to not like Peter become a mouth for Hasatan, or worse become a Judas who outright betrays. You need one of fruits of the spirit, self control, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23).
The problem is that you are never going to be Judas proof. Someone will become jealous and envious, or see you as a a threat, even those you love, and then Satan will take that crack in the door of their hearts to step in and do you harm. Jesus our Lord was so aware of this it reads, “But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.” (John 2:23-25). Our Lord knew at any moment someone could become the Mouth of Satan, or more. Even Jesus’ own family turned on Him, “And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind,” (Mark 3:21), to which when they came looking for Him later he said, “Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” (Mark 3:31-35). So we are not experiencing anything that our Great God and Savior has not already experienced. It is just hard because the churches tend to not talk about the Judas spirit, Satan himself, and how he is going to operate and turn people you love against you if he finds fertile soil in their hearts. It could be your spouse, your children, your best friend, or anyone; all it takes is for them to stop making love a priority, and them to give into thevwitchcraft of rebellion, “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king,” (1 Samuel 15:23), and the demonic of envy, “But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.”(James 3:14-16). How do you then fight back? Is there a way to Judas proof your life? Honestly no. The only way to endure is to adopt the mature Christian path, “I count all things lost but knowing Christ, discarding all things, counting them as rubbish so that I may gain Christ, for this is what mature Christian believes.” (Philippians 3:8, 15). You have to get where you count it as lost. I know that sounds extreme, but that is the reality, unless these persons you love are disciplined, and resist the devil (James 4:7) and refuse to give into envy, and rebellion, they are going to betray you. Your only safeguard is as Richard Wurmbrandt’s Wife said to her Son when she was allowed three words at a concentration camp, “Love Jesus Alone.” Amen.
