In 1859 a pious woman named Anna Bartlett Warner created a theologically rich hymn called “Jesus Loves Me This I Know.” The hymn illustrated the simplicity of the gospel, that Jesus loves us and is a perfect buckler against the accuser of the brethren who attempts to make God seem harsh.
Later in 1862 a man named William Batchelder Bradbury added the famous refrain and repetition of “Yes, Jesus Loves Me”:
“Jesus loves me—this I know,
For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong—
They are weak, but He is strong.
Refrain:
Yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me—
The Bible tells me so!
Jesus loves me—He who died
Heaven's gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in. Refrain
Jesus loves me—loves me still,
Though I'm very weak and ill;
From His shining throne on high,
Comes to watch me where I lie. Refrain
Jesus loves me—He will stay
Close beside me all the way;
If I love Him, when I die
He will take me home on high. Refrain.” -Original Hymn by Anna Bartlett Warner, Bradbury's Golden Shower of S.S. Melodies: a new collection of hymns and tunes for the Sabbath school, edited by Wm. B. Bradbury, New York, 1862
Thay refrain of “Yes, Jesus Loved Me,” serves as a great chant to say to yourself in prayer, especially if you are under siege in spiritual warfare. It helps center the soul and mind in Christ, to identify that our Savior and Lord is loving. In a world where “love is going cold,” (Matthew 24:12), it helps to remind ourselves that our God is love (1 John 4:16).
When the world and its prince (the devil) try to accuse the Lord to you, claiming lies that He is cruel and harsh, hum this hymn and its lines aloud to remind you that Lord Jesus loves you, and He is slow to anger and that He is compassionate, “The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love,” (Psalm 103:8), “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is LORD and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved,” (Romans 10:9), and “that EVERY TONGUE WILL CONFESS that Jesus Christ is LORD, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:11). Amen.
