We are called to worship Jesus our Lord. But what does worship mean? According to the Strong’s Concordance it means to “do reverence to,” “to bow down on your knees in obeisance,” and “to kiss (kyneo).” It is interesting because this definitions denote a duo nature to our worship, one is deep respect that he is Lord God and a kiss is intimacy because we are His bride, “Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.” (Revelation 19:7-9). Thus worship is to esteem our Everlasting Lord with reverences and to kiss, to connect in intimacy with Jesus our Lord! That means worship is a two-fold process in which we revere our Creator and kiss our Bridegroom.
I am reminded of the Blind Man who was born without sight and Jesus restored his eyesight. The man was mistreated by the Pharisees afterward, but when He returned to Jesus who told him who He was, the man responded thus, “Yes, Lord, I believe!” the man said. And he worshiped Jesus.” (John 9:38). The Twelve in another moment when Christ did a miracle to calm a storm worshipped Him, “And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are certainly God’s Son!” (Matthew 14:33). Then there was the Magi at His birth came to worship Jesus, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” (Matthew 2:2). It is clear in Scripture that we are to worship Jesus our Lord! That a day will even come when all will worship him by bowing down, “so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth..” (Philippians 2:10). We tend to avoid bowing in worship in our Protestant churches, save in some High Churches who have kneelers. We really should restore the bowing form of reverence to Jesus, for He is our Creator and Savior and Sovereign Lord! I understand for some of age groups this may be difficult, but there are ways to assist in this. Just like Communion should be every service, I think the act of kneeling in worship ought to be supported. For it is one of three definitions of worship. Amen.
