There is a form of Christian piety that I find revolting! I call it the Worm disposition. In Churches around America in particular, there are these worship songs that say, "Lord we are unworthy, we are worms, please have mercy on us." What?! We are no longer worms or unworthy! Christ Jesus, the Savior and Creator lives within us! How can we look upon ourselves as downcast and despicable when God is within us! We are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17)! We have been transformed by the Most High! We are Born Again! (John 3:7). We no longer are filthy sinners beyond salvation. No! We are worthy because the One True God is within us and thus makes us worthy!
The Scriptures say, "We are co-heirs with Christ!" (Romans 8:17). In Revelation is says, "those who are victorious (endure in faith to the end) shall sit upon my throne." (Revelation 3:21). That is not the mark of a worm! That is not a place for the unworthy! The Church needs to banish this notion of being a dog before God. We are no longer the lost! We have been changed by Christ and thus have his nature residing within us! It is time to stop nursing self pity and start standing tall! Ye saints need to stand with your head high and your gaze fixed upon Jesus Christ!
Too many preachers have misinterpreted the words of King David. The Psalm that says, "I am a worm and not a man.." (Psalm 22:6) is taken out of context. David is ruminating about his sufferings under Saul and prophesying about Christ to come! Within this same Psalm is the important line quoted by Christ on the Cross, "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" (Psalm 22:1). The reason David says he is a worm is to personify and analogize how he feels! It is not the disposition a Saint should have! Besides, David lived in the Age of the Law not the Age of Salvation. He could lose the Holy Spirit and be cut off from God because of his sins, but we live in the Age of Salvation! Jesus Christ has already come, been crucified, and risen! We now can be perpetually purified by the Prince of Peace! We can have out nature which was wormy and sinful transformed into worthy and saintly by the Savior!
So stand tall all ye saints! Do not let the devil or deceived disciples tell you that you are a worm and unworthy! Jesus Christ has changed you! As long as you keep your heart in Him you shall not be a worm again! Let the Lord transform you! Let Him make us his children as Adam before the Fall and perfect like Himself. Keep your head lifted up! Recognize that you are "more than conquerors)!" (Romans 8:37). Acknowledge that you are sons and daughters of the Most High God! (2 Corinthians 6:18). He Made you in His Image! (Genesis 1:27). You are not a worm or unworthy creature! But instead the Bride of Jesus Christ! (Matthew 25:1-18, Revelation 19: 7-9, and Revelation 21:9).
