People, even fellow Christians will use the terms fortune and destiny. Example are, “fortune favors the bold,” and “I want to find my destiny.” Fortune is not wealth, it is a goddess named Fortuna that had a wheel she spun that would either lead to your good or bad fortune. We are told not to participate in fortune or destiny, “But you who abandon (turn away from) the Lord, Who forget and ignore My holy mountain (Zion), Who set a table for Gad [the Babylonian god of fortune], And who fill a jug of mixed wine for Meni [the god of fate]/ But you who abandon the Lord, who forget my holy mountain, who set a table for a god of good fortune, and fill cups of mixed wine for a god of fate/ But you who are abandoning the Lord, you who have forgotten my holy mountain, who are setting a table for Fortune, who are pouring out mixed wine for Destiny.” (Isaiah 65:11).
We hear in a lot of films glorification of Fortune, and Fate/ Destiny,
“Little John: Fortune had smiled on us at last Robin! Robin: And I will not turn my back on her!,” (Robinhood 2010), “this is fortuitous, that means lucky,” (Jospehine, Tombstone), “it is your destiny, (Darth Vader), “then the fates will know you as we know you as Albert Mondego, the Man,” (Edmund Dantes, The Count of Monte Cristo 2002). There is even a video game series by Bungie called Destiny. The glorification of fortune, fate, and destiny in our culture is meant to be seen a humanist way of explaining your purpose and what happens to you without God, but Fortune and Destiny are false gods named Gad and Meni. So they are being glorified when people use these terms of “your destiny,” “your fate,” “good luck,” and “good fortune.”
As Christians we have to stop letting the culture define things for us, and instead remember we are called out of the world, “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” (John 15:19). We do not subscribe to fortune or destiny, we worship The Lord God Trinity who uses terms like:
“Favor: Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!,” (Psalm 90:17),
“Purpose, In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,” (Ephesians 1:11),
“Calling, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14)
“Anointing: But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him,” (1 John 2:27), and “plan,” (Jeremiah 29:11)
The words destiny, fate, luck, and fortune are not used by the Lord.
Even Providence which The Founders of America used in place of the Lord, “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence,” (Declaration of Independence) is actually not the Lord God but Providentia, “In ancient Roman religion, Providentia is a divine personification of the ability to foresee and make provision,” (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Providentia#:~:text=In%20ancient%20Roman%20religion%2C%20Providentia,to%20foresee%20and%20make%20provision.) and “The concept of providence is rooted in the belief in the existence of a benevolent, wise, and powerful deity or a number of beings that are benevolent..” (https://www.britannica.com/topic/Providence-theology). This is because Thomas Jefferson one of chief authors of The Declaration of Independence replaced God The Trinity with Providence because he was Diest and anti- Trinitarian, even writing against the Trinity. What folly! The True God is a Trinity:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” (Matthew 28:19)
“And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” (Matthew 3:16-17).
“According to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you,” (1 Peter 1:2)
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you,” (John 14:26)
“Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth,” (Genesis 1:26),
“Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:21-22)
Thomas Jefferson was so deluded he made his own corrupt Bible called The Jefferson Bible where he changes Scripture into moral philosophy, even Adolf Hitler made his own bible. Scripture says, “And I solemnly declare to everyone who hears the words of prophecy written in this book: If anyone adds anything to what is written here, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.” (Revelation 22:18-19). If that is true for the Book of Revelation, how much more so the rest of the God Breathed Scriptures? (2 Timothy 3:16): “the untaught and unstable [who have fallen into error] twist and misinterpret, just as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.” (1 Peter 3:16-18). Jefferson twisted the Scriptures and is gone to destruction!
Having nothing to do with Providentia, Fortuna, Destiny/ Fate. Trust The Lord God and His Holy Scriptures! The Scriptures are the words of life and spiritual because they come from God!, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth,” (John 4:24), and “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit,” (2 Peter 1:20-21). Not just philosophy and moral teaching! Put your trust in Lord, not false gods and follies of men. Amen.
