When the people gathered to wave palms before the Lord Jesus shouting Hosanna, it was not just identifying Jesus as king, “The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Blessed is the king of Israel!” (John 12:12-13), it was an adoration ordained in The Old Testament that identifies Jesus as God, “And you shall take on the first day the fruit of splendid trees, branches of palm trees and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God seven days.” (Leviticus 23:40). Notice it says rejoice before The Lord your God, I do not know if the people shouting Hosanna in 33 A.D.’s Palm Sunday were aware that Jesus was and is the Lord God incarnate (in a human body, human flesh) and thus were obeying the Old Testament command to worship before the Lord with palms.
There is prophecy pertaining to Christ that uses branch imagery, “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.” (Jeremiah 23:5). That branch from David is Jesus, “Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 1:1-4). That same Jeremiah foretells the New Covenant Jesus instituted (Jeremiah 14:11-14, Luke 22:20). Thus waving of the palm branch can be a declaration that Jesus is indeed the branch of David foretold! This I do think was the intent of the people on The First Palm Sunday. They wanted king to bring them Justice.
Finally the Saints in the last days who are raised from the dead will wave palm branches before Jesus The Lamb of God, “After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb (Jesus see John 1:29-32), clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” (Revelation 7:9-10).
The Palm branch waving will continue on! I say we worship Jesus The Lord God and Lamb of God by waving our palm branches in accordance with these Scriptures! For on Palm Sunday we celebrate Jesus’ triumphal entry to Jerusalem to die for our sins and conquer death. The palm branch It is steeped in important symbolism. May we not only shout “Hosanna in the Highest!” (Mark 11:10), but also “Salvation belongs to our God, and to The Lamb!” (Revelation 7:10). Amen.
