This year has felt very bleak for Christmas. Just as we thought some normalcy was at last attainable, the Omnicron variant of Covid busted our Christmas hopes. Many may even be crying out, “Why God?! Why can’t we have a normal Xmas?!” This certainly is a trying time, and even I find myself finding more comfort in The Waitresses song “Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! Christmas alone this year!” Little did we know this popular song was prophetic of Covid times when people may indeed be forced to spend the Season alone.
The desire to give up on Christmas is strong. What does it mean if you can’t celebrate with family? What does it mean if all we have to look forward to for the holiday and the new year is more of the same restrictions and apocalyptic feeling of Covid forever? What’s to celebrate?
To answer that I call upon a immensely talented Christian Band named Kutless who wrote a song called, “This is Christmas.” No its not a redux of the famous John Lennon and Yoko Ono classic. It is a song that reminds us what Christmas is all about.
“Do you find it hard to sleep tonight
Resting by the Christmas lights?
Could there be something you forgot?
Beyond the bows and mistletoe
The tree with presents wrapped below
There's more to this than you had ever thought
Have we lost the reason that we celebrate each year?
What is Christmas?
If there never was a savior wrapped in a manger
What is Christmas without Christ?
Remember how the story goes
God's gift was wrapped in swaddling clothes
Beneath the star, one great and holy night
The shepherds heard the angels sing
The wise man brought an offering
Peace on Earth began in Bethlehem
Have we lost the reason that we celebrate each year?
What is Christmas?
If there never was a savior wrapped in a manger
What is Christmas?
If the angels never sang
Glory to the new born king?
What is Christmas without Christ?
There'd be no Gloria
In excelsis deo
Gloria
In excelsis deo
What is Christmas?
(Joy to the world)
If there never was a savior wrapped in a manger
(Joy to the world)
What is Christmas without Christ?
This is Christmas
It's all about the savior wrapped in a manger
(Joy to the world)
This is Christmas because of Jesus Christ
(Gloria)
This is Christmas
(In excelsis deo)
Because of Christ
(In excelsis deo)
Because of Christ”

Amen! This is Christmas because of Christ! You cannot even spell the holiday without his Name! The Name above all names! When you feel the holiday blues becoming a weight like heavy snow on the branch of your heart, play this song and remember to fox your eyes on the reason for The Season, Jesus our Lord! Don’t let these bad circumstances of Covid ruin Christmas! Keep your eyes fixed on Christ (Hebrews 12:2) and remember this whole holiday is alo about Him. He too came into a dark world ruler by an empire that salted fields, crucified people in market places, and crushed civilizations. Covid may have not been around during Christ’s first coming, but the Romans who broke people under their cruel yoke were there, and plagues did happen. So remember that while all may seem bleak, and dark and unable to bear, the Star is shining and this time we wait for Christ’s Second Coming! Amen.
