In this terrible global pandemic many are going to pieces. More now than ever we need Jesus to be our Prince of Peace, as we find all around us going to pieces. The world is facing so many crises, that Christmas may even feel less of a constant that sooths and more of a constant reminder nothing is like it was before the pandemic. Perhaps the Jing Bells make you want to deck your halls with your fist, rather than dance around the tree. All of us are facing The Covid Wall, where our lives feel at a standstill, and just as all seems to reach a point of normalcy, of calm, a new storm of a new strain is upon us.
I remarked that the new variant of Covid is called Omnicron, Omni as in omnipotent (all powerful) and cron which is old lady in folklore who uses magical powers to aid or obstruct people, i.e. a witch. So even the name of this new strain invokes despair, that we are at the mercy of an all powerful witch who has obstructed once more, a normal Christmas.
The way to battle this witch spiritually is with some methods I have found helpful. When you are feeling her dark gnarled hand, I suggest playing some music, worship or something cathartic like a rock song by Queen to get your mind off of the depression. Another great method if weather permits is to go into nature, spend time in the woods, on plains, or whatever you have access to, get off the TV, smart devices, and spend some time alone in God’s creation. If you need to be more active, hike, run, fence or whatever if your preference. The point is to let the peace of God’s nature wash over you. Another great method is cliche, read Scripture. I know everyone says that, but I suggest you spend time in the less corrective parts. Read The Gospel of John, Hebrews, Philippians, and the Psalms; these will bolster your soul and spirit, allow you to be encouraged and express your feelings through the words on the page. Stay away from complex books like Revelation and highly corrective passages, example Colossians, Galatians, at least for now, at this Christmastime; you need some encouragement, and exhortation.
Most importantly give yourself a break. If you lose your cool and even say angry epitaphs at God, remember He knows you are in emotional torture from a pandemic and He is merciful and loving. Having peace doesn’t mean the absence of troubles, it is plugging into Prince of Peace in dark times, and asking Him to wash over us with His love and comfort. Remember Our Lord God is always there, talk to him as you would a good friend, even tell Him you are upset and angry that he hasn’t made Covid go away. Be honest, for our Holy Trinity is Truth, and so to “worship in Spirit and Truth,” (John 4:24), we need to be honest what us in our hearts, and tell Him how we need peace, more than ever. Amen.
