When a person believes in Jesus as Lord and Savior, the first book in the Bible every scholar and layperson recommends the new believer read is The Gospel of John. The Apostle John was the closest disciple to Jesus, even knowing Judas was the traitor before everyone else knew in Gethsemane, “So that disciple (John), leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into Judas. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”” (John 13:25-27). John was also the only male disciple and one of the Twelve at the Crucifixion (John 19:25-27). The Gospel of John is the most important Gospel because it show us Jesus as He truly is, The Loving Son of God come to save us, and God Incarnate.
What is more telling is that a man who had no access to any of the Scriptures (Holy Bible), had the Lord tell Him what was necessary to know and he wrote it down in a journal. When a missionary finally met this man he looked at the words God dictated to the man, and it matched verbatim with The Gospel of John! (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.christianpost.com/amp/jesus-appeared-to-middle-eastern-muslim-every-night-recited-entire-gospel-of-john-god-is-moving.html.) If this is the the gospel Our Lord wanted someone to have when they had no Bible, then that tells us its importance!
I am not discounting, debunking, or demeaning the other gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, they are important, but John stands apart. You see I believe the Gospel According to John contains the realities of our relationship with Christ, how easy it is to believe, know Hi,m and know His love; while the Synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke contain Jesus’ teachings, eschatology, and other important knowledge, the Gospel of John contains Jesus, as He is, what his personality and love looks like. The Gospel of John is alive, while the other three are more like historical accounts; the Gospel of John is an intimate encounter, and as if Jesus wrote it Himself; while the other three gospels contain His life and teachings. There is a difference, its why in Prologue to the Gospel of John, the apostle says he found “something missing in the other gospels.” I agree with the apostle, what is missing in the Synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) is Jesus in all His intimacy and what He really is like and how secure our salvation is in Him. Think of it like this, your best friend knows you well and sees intimate details of who you are, this is John to Jesus (John being Jesus’ best friend), but regular friends if they wrote your life story and teachings won’t have intimate picture of what you are like and fullest expression of your teaching except for the best friend. John being Jesus best friend and disciple saw Jesus more intimately and clearly.
I agree with a missionary I met who said “that the greatest lie Satan can make a Christian believe is that they can lose their salvation, because then they spend all their time worrying about losing their salvation.” When Jesus said you cannot be lost, “This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.” (John 6:39), and “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”” (John 10:27-30). The Gospel of John assures and affirms that our eternal life is secure and intimacy with God is certain. I do believe “All Scripture is God Breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16). However, I do believe some Scripture conveys the truth better, and none better than The Gospel of John; That God’s love and salvation is secure for us, never fading or being lost. Amen.
