These are overwhelming times. It feels as if our world has turned upside down. The culture wars and Covid fatigue is enough to crush most of us. It is in times such as these I am inclined to sing this simple song:
“Well, sometimes my life just don't make sense at all
When the mountains look so big,
And my faith just seems so small
So hold me Jesus,
Cause I'm shaking like a leaf
You have been King of my glory
Won't You be my Prince of Peace
And I wake up in the night and feel the dark
It's so hot inside my soul
I swear there must be blisters on my heart
So hold me Jesus,
Cause I'm shaking like a leaf
You have been King of my glory
Won't You be my Prince of Peace
Surrender don't come natural to me
I'd rather fight you for something
I don't really want
Than to take what you give that I need
And I've beat my head against so many walls
Now I'm falling down, I'm falling on my knees
And the Salvation Army band is playing this hymn
And Your grace rings out so deep
It makes my resistance seem so thin
So hold me Jesus,
Cause I'm shaking like a leaf
You have been King of my glory
Won't You be my Prince of Peace
You have been King of my glory
Won't You be my Prince of Peace.” (Written and Sung by Rich Mullins).
Those words are so profound. Many of us have blisters on our souls right now. The Church as a whole could sing, “You’ve been king of my glory, won’t you be my prince of peace,” as we have shifted from favor in the world, the end of Christian Empire, to now persecution and what we need as we are beaten by the waves of this world is to be held by Jesus.
For Mullins got his words from Christ himself, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” (John 10:26-30). Amen.
