San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico |
A tropical storm called Cristobal is approaching New Orleans in the US. Cristobal is Spanish for “Christ Bearer.” Now at first this may invoke the idea of “Theotokios” which is Mary’s name as “God Bearer.”. However, we as Christians are christ bearers, “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20, ESV). We are christ bearers, we bear Him in our hearts, “Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you”(Romans 8:10-11, NLT).
The Cristobal is a reminder that we are Christ bearers, that we are His ambassadors and we are suppose to go forth and preach the Evangelion to all people, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19, NIV). In the middle of storms, political unrest and pandemics, we must remember we bear Christ in our persons and have opportunities to share Him with people right now. This is the time to witness, to share the Word of God with people who are overwhelmed by all that is happening.
It is exciting that in North America newscasters are saying Cristobal over and over which is “Christ Bearer.” While a tropical storm is not something to necessarily delight in, may the Lord Jesus protect our brothers and sisters. Still it is neat it got named something that glorified our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
