Moses and Jesus |
God's character is consistent throughout the Old and New Testaments. He is loving God. He is a God of Life. People often remark when they read Old Test that the Lord is a cruel and war like God. They cite the sacrifices in Temple as pagan, but honestly those sacrifices were men's ideas, and God went along with it because "they weaker in faith," (Romans 14:1-3) and by the way those lambs, bulls, and pigeons after being sacrificed for sin, were then cooked and eaten by the priests (the only food they got). So it wasn't like the animal was just thrown aside after. The Psalmist David, A Man after God's own Heart said in a moment of revelation, "you do not delight in sacrifices do you Lord? You do not want the blood of bulls and lambs, but instead broken and contrite (repentant) heart." (Psalm 51:16-17). The Prophet Samuel says something similar about sacrifices when addressing King Saul's disobedience, He says, "Does the Lord in burnt offerings and sacrifices more than obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, to heed is better than the fat of rams." (1 Samuel 15:22).
The Lord in the Old Testament was doing several things at once, he was accommodating the weak faith of the Israelites who like most people believed in sacrifice. Those sacrifices were used for food, so really no different than hunting a deer, skinning it, and then eating it for dinner after cooking it. But also God in Old Testament allowed foreshadowing in physical to foreshadow the spiritual. Hence when Jesus says, "you must eat my body and drink my blood," (John 6:56) this was connected to the sacrifice of the Lamb that they did at Passover. Jesus was connecting the physical with the spiritual. Our Lord was showing his Disciples what they had always been doing as Passover, breaking bread and drinking wine meant! Jesus was not creating cannibalism! He was illustrating a relationship, the New Covenant with the bread (His body) and Wine (His blood).
Often atheists and even Christians attack the Old Testament, citing that it was different god than the God of the New Testament. But this is both flawed theology and untrue! The Old Testament is misinterpreted a collection of books that show God as war god, destroyer, judgmental and etc. But lets look at the events that most people claim that God was unjust. Take the Flood. Many think that God was not merciful to flood the earth. What they miss is God's mercy in Noah and His Family be spared. They also do not understand that up until Noah, angels had fallen and had sex with women (Genesis 6:1-8), creating a race of giants. People have become so depraved and unwillingly to repent, that God who can see their hearts, decided to judge them. Only the Almighty has the right to judge! And yet his mercy is made manifest in Noah and His family, and if it weren't for that mercy, we, the human race would not be here! You can argue and point your finger at God and shout, "mean God! Unjust!" Because God showed mercy and allowed one family to survive the Flood and consequently for you to be born!
The second event is Sodom and Gomorrah. People cite this as another example of vengeful and angry God destroying a whole population. But lets look at the story. Lot, the only holy man in the city of Sodom, was taking to the messengers (angels) and Abraham was talking to God and asking the Lord to spare the city, "Lord, if there are at least 50 righteous people, will you spare the city? To which the Lord says, If you can find 50 righteous people, I will spare the city. So he pleads with God again, if I find 45 righteous people, will you spare the city? God agrees again. Then Abraham asks if there are 40 righteous people, will you spare the city? The Lord says, yes, if you can find 40 righteous people I swill spare the city. The Abraham petitions again to the Lord asking if he finds 30 will God spare the cities, and the Lord says yes he will spare them if there 30. Abrahams then asks God if He will spare Sodom and Gomorrah if there are 20 righteous people and Lord says yes he will spare the cities if there 20 righteous people. Finally Abraham goes to God and asks, May the Lord not be angry, but if I find 10 total people who are righteous will you spare Sodom and Gomorrah? The Lord once again agrees, but after this Abraham gives up petitioning." (Genesis 18:16-33). God then destroys Sodom and Gomorrah. But those who discredit the Lord in the Old Testament Times leave out is that many times Abraham went to the Almighty and petitioned and the Lord was open to negotiation and was desiring to be merciful! One wonders if Abraham had gone one more time and said, "if I can find 4 righteous people?" Would God have agreed? We will never know.
Something we should contrast with Sodom and Gomorrah is Nineveh which was just as evil. Jonah went there and pronounced judgment, "but the people of Nineveh repented before the Lord and God did not destroy them. Jonah was indignant and mad at God, saying "why didn't you destroy them? They deserve judgment. To which God tenderly says, "You had compassion on the plant for which you did not cause to grow, which came up over night and perished overnight. Should I not have compassion on Nineveh, the city with 120,000 slaves who do not know their right hand from their left hand, as well as many animals?." (Jonah 4:10-11). Here is an example of God in Old Test being like the New Testament in Jesus who it says, "was moved by compassion to heal people." (Mark 6:34. Matthew 14:14, and Luke 7:13).
Usually the general example people give for saying Old Testament God is different and mean is that he commanded King Saul and King David to commit genocide. King Saul is told to kill at the Amalekites, even their livestock and burn their spoils. But Saul disobeys and The Prophet Samuel confronts Him. So what is the deal? Why does God want to annihilate these people? Why was Saul wrong to spare Haman and his Mother? Here is the answer, the Amalekites practiced bestiality: sex with animals, which would have made the livestock diseased and people full of disease (worse than Aids or Bubonic plague) and the Lord did not want to have his people get infected (Israeli Archaeologist and Anthropologist). Secondly, God knew that if Haman was spared he would try to destroy God's People. Haman did try to destroy the Israelites, see the Book of Esther. So in this case the Lord wanted to spare his people from plague, mercifully end the lives of the people in horrible pain of disease, and to protect his people from rise of Haman who did try out destroy the Jews later as told in the Book of Esther. Interestingly, King Saul was killed by an Amalekite later.
The Old Testament God is the New Testament God! Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah in Isaiah 53, Psalm 22:16, Jeremiah 31 and 32, Genesis 3 and plethora of other Scriptures (see list at end of post). In Genesis 1 it says in ancient Aramaic and Hebrew, "Elohim (God plural, we) said let there be light." Jesus appears in furnace with Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego: "He (Nebuchadnezzar) said "look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the god" (Daniel 3:25). Jesus said, "I saw Satan fall like star from heaven," (Luke 10:18) which is interesting because Satan has already fallen when He's with Eve in Eden (Genesis 2-3). The Apostle John even states that "Jesus was there in beginning (before Creation and during it)." (John 1:1). Its time to stop believing these people who take passages out context to condemn God. If you read the Old Testament and New Testament you shall see the whole story of God's love, his mercy, and his plan for Salvation! So those of you trying to discredit the Lord in Old Test, beware! For you shall be judged harshly for speaking against the Almighty One who is "the same yesterday, today, and forever!" (Hebrews 13:8).
To make my final case I give you Jeremiah 31 and 32. The army of Nebuchadnezzar having arrived and surrounded Jerusalem. They will raise Jerusalem to the ground and the Lord God says to the Prophet Jeremiah, "I have sent judgment to my people Israel and Judah, because they worshiped Baal on roof tops and made their daughters walk through the fire for Molech, and drank drinks to other gods in my sight and forgotten me. But this judgment will not last forever, a Day is coming when I will establish a new and everlasting covenant (Jesus Christ) with my people, and they will be my people and I will be their God; and "I will forgive their sins and remember them no more." (Jeremiah 32:26-42, Jeremiah 31:34). Here we can see a balance, God is justly punishing his wicked people, but He has promise for their salvation. Justice and judgment are happening to the Israelites, but Jesus is coming!
