For Americans Thanksgiving is a day when families gather together and enjoy a feast. The origin of the holiday dates back to The Pilgrims who left merry old England because of religious persecution and to create a new colony. At this colony they suffered great loss of life. On the harvest that the Pilgrims thrived thanks to the Lord and the Indians like Squanto, they held a great feast to give thanks.
Like many holidays the original meaning has gotten lost in the commercialism. Thanksgiving is now more about being a glutton for a day than God's provision and loving kindness. As Christians we should be thankful. The Good Lord has given us so much! For many it may seem like there isn't much to give thanks about; their families are falling apart, friends going afoul, and finances are consumed by debt. But there is something we can all be thankful for.. each breath and the fact we are here.
We are not promised tomorrow Jesus says and yet we are ever conscious of the future and planning for it. Instead of stressing about what comes next, we should be thankful for today. Thankfulness is not a ritual or once a year holiday; it is a mindset we should have as believers in Christ. It is something for everyone, not just Americans! For many there is so much to be thankful for: a roof over your head, good food, family members, nice possessions and so on. For others it is one more day on this Earth to know Christ and to help others. If you have a horrible family, hardly any friends, and so on, then give thanks for the most important thing of all: Jesus Christ!
We should all give thanks that God so loved us He sent his only begotten Son who is Jesus Christ! He died for our sins and is the door to heaven! In Him we have all hope and purpose! The Lord gives us what no person or possession on this Earth can, that is peace. So be thankful! For today is the day the Lord has made and we shall be glad in it! You may have to face some fearsome family members or force yourself to be kind to people who you dislike. But remember the chief reason to be thankful for is Jesus Christ and how he changed our lives!
Thank You Jesus for loving us so much! May we who celebrate Thanksgiving remember to thank you and to give to others the same love you gave us! Amen.
