Good Friday is part one of our salvation. Part two is Resurrection Sunday. Today is when our faith was ratified. Today marks when death's sting ended and life everlasting was reinstated through Christ Jesus. Resurrection Day is a cause for celebration! We should rejoice and be glad that God has defeated the power of sin and death! This holyday is the birth of Christianity, for it is the seal or as my pastor said, "receipt" of our salvation. On Good Friday Jesus paid for our sins in full, like writing a check, and today we get the receipt and can say to Satan or anyone who would question our salvation, that we are saved!
Unfortunately, what should be the most important holyday to every Christian, has been hijacked by paganism and secularism. Most people celebrate this day as Easter, which is actually the pagan derivation of a goddess name Eostre. In fact, the Anglo Saxon folk tales claim that this Eostre goddess has hares (rabbits) and eggs prominently around her. Now most Christians and Secularists celebrate this ancient paganism and tend to commemorate Christ's Resurrection at Church alone, but not in their homes. It is a shame that we have allowed a heathen tradition to become the apple of children's eye, than God himself and what He has done! It makes me grieve bitterly that children desire candy and to hunt for eggs over wanting to hear the Story of Jesus' Resurrection!
If we are to teach the next generation the Truth, we must let go of the lies. It will not be easy. Children will see their friends hunting for eggs and getting prizes and chocolate. But is chocolate more important than Christ? Is it such a big sacrifice to deny the source of decadence when it means sparing a soul from damnation? Peter says in his first letter, "Christ suffered and underwent pain, you must have the same attitude He did, you must be ready to suffer too. Remember when your body suffers, sin loses its power and you won't be spending the rest of your life chasing after evil desires, but will be anxious to do the will of God." (1 Peter 4:1-3).
I am not calling for boycott of candy or to make your children miserable. There are other ways you could commemorate this day. You could create new traditions like giving candy for Bible Verses read or recited. You could read The Resurrection in the Gospels aloud and give prizes to your children when they read a verse or paragraph. The point is that this is suppose to be about Jesus, not Peeps, the Easter Bunny, and candy. This is one of the most important days to celebrate and it is being lost in the allure of earthly and pagan things! I guarantee you that a child will not grow up and say that their childhood was ruined because you refused to lie about a fictitious Easter bunny, but in contrast they will be greatly grieved and sorrowful if you refused to teach them about Jesus' Resurrection and how through Him there is no longer death, but eternal life!
The time is coming where we must decide to do what is Christ-like or what is comfortable and convenient. Let us remember, Christ choose a cross, will we pick up our cross? For our sake and the sake of those we have influence over?
