I must confess The Christmas Creep, that phenomenon each year when Xmas decorations and deals inches closer ad closer into Autumn, sometimes even August, has killed my Christmas Spirit. The commercialization of the holiday has reach its Sensate stage, where now the Joy, that balm of the Holy Spirit, is overshadowed by the Warlock of industry and the spells sales that have everyone walking around like Zombies looking for deals to appease the holiday agenda of you can’t show love without a gift.
Its sad how the holiday to commemorate The Greatest Gift of God, His Son, coming into the world, has been overshadowed by commerce, which is no surprise for Satan is the chief creator of commerce, “Your rich commerce led you to violence, and you sinned. So I banished you in disgrace from the mountain of God. I expelled you, O mighty guardian cherub (cherubim), from your place among the stones of fire.” (Ezekiel 28:16). The Warlock of Christmas Commerce is no other than the evil one, whipping people up into a fury of buying, and bad behavior to get that coveted deal or item, when the greatest gift is ours and its free, Christ Jesus ans eternal life!
This year I noticed The Nativities are scarce in department stores. One department store sold altar crosses of resin, now a decade and half later a Nativity at Christmas time in the decorations is rare. There is all this pressure tp honor Ramadan, and Hindu holidays on the calendar, without dilution to those religions, but our holiday, Christmas, is caked in fairytale dust, gnomes, magic reindeer, and other folklore devils to take attention away from The Baby in The Manger! Remember brothers and sisters, we are suppose to fix our eyes on Christ, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2). You would think it would be easy to focus on Christ during Christ-mas! But the devil in his commerce and trade has decorated over The Manger with Evergreen Trees and Santa Claus, obscuring The Reason For The Season. We wonder why Xmas doesn’t quite feel like it did in our youth, well that’s because the carols are replaced with secular Christmas tunes, the Manger is replaces with a Sleigh, The Wisemen replaced by St. Nick, and The Holy Family is overshadowed by our incessant need to please our families (blood or not) with gifts to prove our devotion and love.
We use to do things out of His Love, for God is love, “So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him,” (1 John 4:16) and our love when we gave gifts or made a card or helped someone, but now its “rush, rush,” gotta get that deal! The spells of the Warlock of Industry clapping his gnarled hands and bearing his teeth as we run to and fro in his wheel, ignoring the Wonder of this time of year, The Celebration of Christ’s First Coming. If we are to break the spell, we as Christians will need to make concentrated effort to take back Christmas in our homes. Fighting the ‘machine’ of the Winter Warlock (Satan) is futile, too many who do not know Christ are possessed by him, “You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God.” (Ephesians 2:2), and so will keep the wheel going. Our aim must be our own churches, our own households, that we fix our eyes on Christ this Christmas through carols, reading Luke 1 & 2, Matthew 1 & 2, and other ideas to fix are eyes on Jesus, and not just this time of year, but all the time of the year. Amen.
