Jesus is The I AM, the Lord who told Moses “I AM that I AM.” (Exodus 3:14). Many times Jesus spoke to people and declare Himself the I AM God:
“As Jesus said "I AM he," they all drew back and fell to the ground!” (John 18:6)
“Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” (John 8:58)
“You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I AM.” (John 13:13)
“Jesus said to him, "I AM the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6)
“I AM the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.” (John 15:1)
“I AM the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)
The word I AM means Yahweh and so Jesus is using this name for Himself and saying I am as we use it in our vocabulary to me this is who I am, and thus Christ is saying I am I AM, I am the Lord God made flesh. The I AM is IMMANUEL, God with us (Matthew 1:23). Jesus Christ is The I AM and Immanuel come into flesh and body to die for our sins and give us eternal life (1 Peter 1:24, 1 Peter 3:18, 1 John 5:11, 1 John 4:15, John 6:40, John 3:16, Romans 10:9-10). He rose from the dead and now sits at the right hand of the Father I AM and the Holy Spirit I AM.
In the Aramaic when Jesus uses the word I AM it is very clear: “Jesus (Eloha, Yeshua, Iesous, Iesus) said to him, "I AM THE LIVING GOD, The Way and The Truth and The Life; no man comes to my Father but by me alone." (John 14:6). Our English language causes a lot of confusion, for instance the word know can be gnosis or to know about something or it can be ginosko / epignosko to know someone in personal intimate relationship or it can be eros or to know sexually and conjugally. Whenever Jesus says I AM the Good Shepherd or I Am bread from Heaven, He is not saying in English fashion that He is this, He is also saying “ I AM the Living God and I am like the bread from heaven.”
Aramaic was the language of Adam, Eve, Abraham, Moses and even Jesus and the disciples. Hebrew is language used only in courts of Pharisees, Aramaic was common language of Moses and Jesus Christ and so he spoke “I AM the way..” in Aramaic and it was translated into Greek because Greek was the French or English of the day, the international language every Jew, Roman, and Gentile understood.
When God told Moses “ I AM that I AM,” He is saying “I am the Living God, I am the Living God.” This then makes Jesus who is the Living God made flesh’s words extra extraordinary, “'I AM the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' So he is the God of the living, not the dead." (Matthew 24:32). This does not mean God doesn’t have power of the dead, no Jesus who is God has the keys to death and hades (Revelation 1:17). Christ has tasted death for all who believe in Him (Hebrews 2:9) and has taken the power of death from the devil (Hebrews 2:14-15). What Jesus means is that He and the rest of the Holy Trinity Godhead is the God of Life, creates all life and is the source of life and sustains all life (Colossians 1:17), and that he is not a god of death like Anubis; rather The I AM is the God who conquered eternal death on the cross (Isaiah 53, Hebrews 2:9-15, John 6:40, John 3:16-18) and Has power over death to bring it to life again, “Jesus said to her, "I AM (I am the Living God) the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.” (John 11:25).
Jesus is The I AM, God Incarnate, the Godhead made into body and flesh (Colossians 2:9, Titus 2:13, John 1:1-17, 2 Peter 1:1). If we understand these words we then see the whole New Testament and Old Testament declares Jesus is God and He is One with the Father and Holy Spirit who are the I AM too. Jesus tells us I am (this is who I am) the I AM (the living God). Amen.
