I believe all myths are based on truth. The Greek, Norse, and Egyptian Mythologies about the pantheon of gods, from Zeus and Oiden to Hercules the Hero and Thor is a distorted version of the fallen angels, "the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years. In those days, and for some time after, giant Nephilites (Nephilim) lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes and famous warriors of ancient times." This is where stories of Heracles, Thor, The Immortals, Clash of the Titans and all mythological tales of men with supernatural and incredible powers and strengths; for Nephilim were giants and powerful, many of them lived in Canaan when Joshua and Israelites spied out the Promise Land, "We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."(Numbers 13:33). The legend of King Arthur and Round Table is based on the Kingdom of Heaven where all men are untied in a brotherhood, "Treat everyone with high regard: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king," (1 Peter 2:17, BSB), "All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord; they will bring glory to your name." (Psalm 86:9). King Arthur and His Knights sought to create a kingdom where all were united in brotherhood around The Round Table. The most Christian tales by Christen de Troyes and Sir Thomas Malory include the connection to faith in Jesus Christ and Holy Grail (Chalice), which is the cup Jesus Christ drank from and said, "Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you.This is my blood of the New Covenant, poured out for many for forgiveness of sins," (Matthew 26:28). Sir Galahad's quest for the Holy Graal and Camelot being a "city on a hill," in a dark world is nothing if not an allusion to the Kingdom of Heaven and what Christ wants mankind to be in Him.
The Fountain of Youth is a legend that a fountain exists that will give anyone that drinks it eternal youth and life. This fountain is actually an aberration and myth based on the Real God, Jesus Christ is, "How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light." (Psalm 36:7-9), and "but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:14). The Fountain is Jesus Christ, and Living Water comes forth from Him as blood, "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. (John 6:54-56). Jesus Christ is the fountain of living water and eternal life. The only source of immortality comes from Immanuel.
We are never to leave our bodies for any reason via any craft, "There shall not be found among you any one that makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, or an observer of times (astrologer), or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee." (Deuteronomy 18:9-12), "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I [am] the LORD," (Leviticus 19:28), "And the soul that turns after such as have familiar (family) spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people," (Leviticus 20:6), "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death," (Revelation 21:8). As for how we are to treat our bodies, "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service," (Romans 12:1-2), and " But I keep under my body, and bring [it] into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway." (1 Corinthians 9:27). The only exception of leaving the body is when God The Father, Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit decides to take someone to heaven, " know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know--God knows. And I know that this man--whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows--was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell. I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses." (2 Corinthians 12:2-5). Paul is talking about the apostle John, " I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, as of a trumpet, 11 saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and,“What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia:to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.” (Revelation 1:9-11). The Apostle Paul speaks of the Apostle John who was caught up in the spirit by Jesus Christ, and was given the Revelation of Jesus Christ (Revelation 1:1). It is one thing is a person is suddenly caught up by the Lord God the Father, Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit, this is acceptable because God has done it, but to try and do it with sorceries, mediums, alchemy, necromancy, astro-projection, and etc is evil. Leaving the body is Satanic, and the danger is someone can end up stuck out of their body and thus go to, "The Outer Darkness," (Matthew :12), "The Gnashing of Teeth," (Luke 13:28) and "Hellfire." (Matthew 10:28).
There is a writing about Tithonius, a man who asked Zeus for immortality. Tithonius continues to age until his body cannot stand and he is chained to the ground by broken bones. Zeus comes to Tithonius and tells him, "you should have asked for eternal youth, not immortality." This story is pagan, and not the True God whom we serve, but it raises a point. Why would anyone want to live forever in this life? Here there is perpetual suffering, pain, and mourning. In the Kingdom of Heaven, "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death' or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." (Revelation 21:4). In heaven and the New Heaven and Earth, we shall have mansions, "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2, KJV). The Apostle Paul says when Christ appears, "And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:18). There will be a New Earth and New Heaven, "Then I saw "a new heaven and a new earth," for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea." (Revelation 21:1). There will be a New Jerusalem, " saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Look! God's dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.When he measured it, he found it was a square, as wide as it was long. In fact, its length and width and height were each 1,400 miles. Then he measured the walls and found them to be 216 feet thick (according to the human standard used by the angel). The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass. I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple." (Revelation 21:3-5, 16-22)
Why would anyone want to pass that all up to live forever on this desolate dwelling?
The rebellious and unbelieving want to escape hell without going to heaven. These wicked people tempt God by seeking a Fountain of Youth so they can live forever in this world, but they are fools! "For with fire and with his sword the LORD will execute judgment on all people, and many will be those slain by the LORD," (Isaiah 66:16) and "The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God's wrath.The grapes were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed from the winepress in a stream about 180 miles long and as high as a horse's bridle,"(Revelation 14:19-20), "He shall separate the sheep and goats,"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life," (Matthew 25:46),
"They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!," (Revelation 6:16), and "Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son." (John 3:18). Eternal Youth will not save anyone, for the Savior will come with scythe and if you are His followers you shall be put on thrones (Luke 22:30) and judged the evil ones, "Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!," (1 Corinthians 6:3) but if you are not His followers, ""Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels." ()
Despite the facts, many people are still chasing the fountain of youth with skin products. Advertisements promise the fountain of youth, and tree of life if you pay for their cream, hydrating serums, and more. Other more severe treatments include Botox, and Face lifts were cuts in the face and around wrinkles is done to stretch skin and make it look younger. But the process of face lifts distorts how people look, some example are Robert Redford, Jennifer Garner, and Hilary Clinton; all of whom have jawlines that no longer are same, and even drastically different chins. This quest for youth is destroying people, and it is hope while founded in our origin in the Garden of Eden, we want to live forever and stay young because we were suppose to, but sin destroys our bodies. We must now look to the Tree of Life who is Jesus Christ that died on the Tree (Cross) and whose blood is the living fountain of eternal life for us, "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them." (John 6:54,56).
Beyond creams, there are people seeking cures via embryo stem cells (murder of innocent children) and other phials (like old witchcraft potions in modern form) that promise to activate your pituitary glands to reproduce ageless cells. Some are seeking to defy death by surgeries, health regimes, and new breakthrough medicines. The problem is that this is playing God, because He says, "I am the Alpha nad Omega, I hold the keyes to death and hades." (Revelation 1:18). Postponing our death is folly, because there is no death, "Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26, NIV-ESV hybrid).
What should Christians do? Can we use age defying, age defense, and anti-age creams? It all comes down to motives. Are you wanting to look your best or are you trying to defy entropy? I think using creams, dying hair, and doing realistic things to stay young is fine, it is when it becomes a quest that consumes your time, soul, and finances that it becomes evil. Remember that as Christians, we seek not this earth, but the Kingdom of Heaven. Our treasure is not on this earth, ""Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." (Matthew 6:19-20). But that doesn't mean you shouldn't take care of your body, "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;" (1 Corinthians 6:19), and "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship." (Romans 12:1). The point is do not be obsessed with trying to out run Time's clock, but at same time there is nothing in Bible that dissuades or condemns wanting to stay youthful within reason.
As Christians what place should we store mythologies? We must be careful of mythologies because they are the Fallen sons of god (angels) take, account, and version of events. The Bible tells us what really happened. While it can be enlightening to know the legends, we must be careful they do not lead us astray from the Lord Jesus Christ.
