Once upon a time Robin Hood was actually about a English Yeomen who was Christian, and fought the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and the wicked King John. I remember King Richard Lionheart, the Crusader, was even praised and Robin even working to fight in his name. Among Robin’s merry men was the Friar Tuck who blessed unions in Sherwood and fought alongside the men in Lincoln Green.
The early Robin Hood was full of positive Christian themes, an Outlaw who decides to defy a Usurper to the throne, Prince John. It is in this era we had Disney’s famous animated Robin Hood with anamorphic characters, Robin and Maid Marian being Foxes. Before that was Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, in which Flynn did his fencing with swagger. However, from then on things grew darker, with Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham played by Alan Rickman being an Occultist who serves his Mother a Witch, and Morgan Freeman a Muslim companion to Robin Hood. Then in the BBC Robin Hood Series
(2006), Robin Hood basically adopted the Saracen faith, and has a curved Scimitar, and The Sheriff of Nottingham tortures people with cross devices and is devout Christian. Then there was The Ridley Scott film with Russell Crowe as Robin Loxley, and Cate Blanchett is Maid Marian. In that version the Church is evil, Friar Tuck is a drunkard, and the triumph of the Outlaw is seen as Self Reliance. There was Jamie Fox film of Robinhood set in the future?, which of course Fox’s character is a Muslim and teaches Robin all he knows; cuz no Christian can know how to use a Longbow well.
Come to the new series released by MGN+ today, Robin is part of a Saxon family that worships the old gods (The Lord God is not old? Judeo-Christianity is 5,025yrs old) and is pagan, his whole family is pagan, and beliefs in Aesir and Godda the Fairy, and all the pagan beliefs is strong in the series. While the Christian Normans, with good ol Sean Bean as Sheriff of Nottingham, are depicted as scheming and abusive, even beating their daughters. The Pagans are depicted as happy folk who have great weddings in the woods, when the historical fact that they sacrificed young daughters at henges, and killed babies is completely glossed over. Like that Mask of Zorro series I reviewed, this is a revisionist take on Robinhood, with the intent of depicting Christ as cruel, the church are cold and controlling, and those devoted to it as callous and creepy. It is part of campaign of most companies making films and shows to disparage and depict Christianity as cruel faith. When they seem to forget that Jesus was crucified, his apostles persecuted and killed, and that they were not controlling, but full of compassion for people.
I grow weary of watching everything I once loved mutate into some antichrist sermon against the church and Christians. People wonder why in Africa they are killing Christians, committing genocide, well there is fervor against Christians right now, and here in the West they are fanning flames with shows like this Robin Hood. I will say the Robin in this series is likable, very charming in his shyness, but see that is the thing, he is pagan, and so its making you fall for a pagan protagonist. Marian is sweet, and yet you know that when the time comes she will caste aside her Christian faith to be in forest with Robin. Sean Bean is an excellent Sheriff of Nottingham, I will say that is no surprise for her is a seminal actor. But while he professes the cross and Christ, he is a cruel man, scheming to destroy lives.
I cannot in good conscience recommend this Robin Hood. For it is meant to make you sympathize with paganism, which is having a come back in Neo Paganism. I have known people who are Neo Pagan, neighbors and even dear friend who apostatized to become a Norse Neo Pagan. It grieved me so to see them caste aside Christ, the only Salvation for demons like Oiden, Freya, Loki, and etc. So when I say I am alarmed about Paganism being promoted, I have seen such promotion harm people I love. We must not entertain darkness, and that is what this show is, “And do not have fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even expose them.” (Ephesians 5:11) nor have fellowship with table of demons which is the Pagans, “You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too. You cannot eat at the Lord’s Table and at the table of demons, too.” (1 Corinthians 10:21).
There is a concerted effort to make paganism and witchcraft seem positive in media. We must resist entertaining demons, and watching these abominations. For what you entertain can in time grow a stronghold in your life, and try to seduce you from pure and simple faith, “I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may be led astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 11:3). For make no mistake the demons behind shows like this MGM+ Robin Hood want to make people fall in love with the pagan protagonist and view the church as the show depicts. I am not saying the Medieval Church as not cruel, but the depiction is being used to caste a light on Christianity now not just back hen under the Popes. Our enemy is wielding shows like this to try and poison the minds of people so that they will not know Peace, the Gospel. As Christians we have to make a firm stand or else the pagans will pervert the image of our Savior and his True Church which has been through the ages until now. Amen.
