Jadis The White Witch, The Chronicles of Narnia: TLWW |
I once wrote a post “Magic is Making A Comeback,” where I explored how magick, white (Wiccan) and black (Occult) is becoming popular, especially in fantasy films and pop culture. I shall supplement that post with this one and re-explore how magic is making waves in cinema, literature, media, and religion.
Magic or sorcery is a practice upon which people wield supernatural powers such as conjuring, necromancy, alchemy, soothsaying, divining, fire walking, and more. All of these practices are demonic and forbidden by The Lord God Trinity (Deuteronomy 18:12, Revelation 21:8, Acts 19:19). Magic tends to have a spectrum from White to Black Magic; New Age to Dark Arts. Black Magick users tend to do the more socially disturbing such as drinking blood like vaimpires, human sacrifice, animal sacrifice, self mutilation, violent sex orgies, and murder. Most law enforcement can prosecute dark magic users because they do illegal acts. White magic users on the other hand do not normally participate in illegal activity; they do not indoctrinate with violence but instead enlist crystals, drugs like Cannabias, hypnosis, consensual ecstatic sexual orgies, and healing potions. White Magick users tend to be viewed as ‘good’ because they do not act violently and their aim is betterment, mediation, and pleasure. White witches and warlocks are very environmental, viewing Nature created by Mother Earth as needing protection and so the Green Movement tends to approve of them. Of the two, white and black magic, white is more sinister because it seduces with charm and pleasure and health programs like Holistic Medicine (that uses crystals and odd drugs); while black arts users from their appearance of wearing black, skin head to mohawk hair styles, tattoos, spikes and other paraphernalia tend to illicit negative responses from people upfront.
The main carrier of White Magic is the New Age religion that focuses on meditation, esoteric teaching, and elements like crystals to bring ‘betterment of the soul.’ While New Age borrows from its parents Buddhism and Hinduism, New Age is unique in that it encourages mystical powers like spells.
Sorcery has become vogue in 20th and 21st Centuries. Through literature, cinema, television, and video games, the teachings of black and white magic have found there way into everyone’s home. One need not look far to find Merlin the Wizard and Morgan le Fey the Witch in Arthurian Legend, I Dream Genie (Jinn), Sabrine the Teenage Witch (Netflix’s sequel Series has the pentagram, and the Church of Satan sued Netflix for millions over the one they used), Charmed, Bewitched, The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter/Fantastical Beasts (theme park, books, movies and video games), The Order (Netflix), Wizards of Waverlyplace, That’s So Raven, Fable (video game), Dungeons and Dragons (RPG Cosplay to video games and beyond), Elder scrolls, Warcraft (video game), Magic The Gathering (card game), The Inheritance Cycle (Books: Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, Inheritance), Fortnite (video game), Black and White (RPG RTS Computer Game), Avengers (Scarletwitch superheroine), Mighty Morphing Power Rangers (Ursula the Witch, conduits, Zurg the Wizard), Super Mario Bros. (Kamek the Witch koopa), Sonic The Hedgehog (Emeralds and Rings give characters powers, New Age), Banjo and Kazooie (Mumbo Witchdoctor is depicted as transmutes the player, and Gruntilda is the witch villian), The Legend of Zelda (Ganondorf is sorcerer, Link an elf who uses magic potions, there are magical fairies, and the Triforce is three goddesses akin to Mother Earth and the Elements), Transformers (the Allspark is magical), Pokemon (magical/ghost class of creatures such as Ghastly and Haunter), Yui-Ghi-oh (egyptian witchcraft and deities like Osiris), Inyusha (demon anime), Dragon-Ball Z and GT (anger demons and dragon sorcery), Mary Poppins, Star Wars (the Jedi are white magic users snd Sith black magic users: Light side and Dark side), Justice League (has a Satanic villain, cubes of magic) X-Men (magic like powers of healing and controlling elements), and many more.
Worse is the paradoxical Christian magic stories created by J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Tolkien has as featured characters in The Silmarillion-The Hobbit-The Lord of the Rings: Wizards (Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast), Witchking of Agmar (Nazgul, Ring Wraith Leader), Annatar/Necromancer/Sauron who is sorcerer who makes magical rings of power, Galadriel (white elf witch), Arwen uses magic water stallions, Magic cloaks, magic seords like Sting and Glamdring and Anduril/Narsil, Palantir (seeing stones, witchcraft orbs), Morgoth/Melkor creates orcs, goblins, and Belrogs with his craft, elves use magic to protect their lands, Dwarves use magical stones and ore, Men wield magical swords, and etc. In C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia, Aslan The Lion talks about the Deep Magic and dies according go Desp Magic rules on a Stonehenge table (Celtic and druid witchcraft), Jadis the White Witch used her Medusa powers to cause a hundred year winter, Lucy Pevensie uses a magical cordial fo revive wounded allies, Prince Caspian gets involved in Occultic conjuring with a hag (witch) and werewolf to return Jadis from the dead (necromancy), New Age/ Greek Mythos Dryads float about, The Lady in Greem witch who enslaves dwarves in Underland, be-spells Prince Caspian’s heir and son Prince Rilian and she turns into a snake, magical horses, and more. Tolkien was devout Catholic, but so is J.K. Rowling who wrote Harry Potter and its prequels Fantastical Beasts, of her books genuine witches said, “the spells are too advanced for our kids.” C.S. Lewis, the beloved theologian who wrote “Mere Christianity” and “The Problem of Pain,” reintroduced people to Greek Mythology, Drudic arts, and Celtic Magic. Which proved what Paul said, “If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work. 14If what he has built survives, he will receive a reward. 15If it is burned up, he will suffer loss. He himself will be saved, but only as if through the flames.” (1 Corinthiaks 3:12-25). Although C.S. Lewis copped out to Universalism when he wrote a Calormen (Islamicesque people) named Emeth who had worshipped Tash gets to go tp True Narnia because Aslan (Arabic for lion) says, “you really were looking for me, seeking me,” which if Aslan was suppose to be a christ archetype he fails miserably, “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.” (John 3:18), and “It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Jesus is
“‘the stone you builders rejected,
which has become the cornerstone.’
12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:10-12).
The truth is Witches, Wizards, Warlocks, Witchdoctors, Psychics, Sorcerers, Soothsayers, Oracles,Diviners, Necromancers are promised hellfire,
“But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." (Revelation 21:8)
True converts throw their spellbooks in the fire:
“A number of them who had been practicing sorcery brought their incantation books and burned them at a public bonfire. The value of the books was several million dollars.” (Acts 19:19)
Simon Magus (The Sorcerer) was told by The Apostle Peter he would die, “Peter answered: "May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.” (Acts 8:20-21)
Paul prayed against a sorcerer, “But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. Saul, also known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he looked the sorcerer in the eye. You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun." Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand.” (Acts 13:8-11),
Paul rebuked a pythoness, “One day as we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl with a spirit of clairvoyance, who earned a large income for her masters by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation. She continued this for many days. Eventually Paul grew so aggravated that he turned and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” And the spirit left her at that very moment. When the girl’s owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities in the marketplac” (Acts 16:16-19).
Magic users are forbidden according to Old Testament and the Didache:
“When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.10Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, practices divination or conjury, interprets omens, practices sorcery, 11casts spells, consults a medium or familiar spirit, or inquires of the dead. 12For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD. And because of these detestable things, the LORD your God is driving out the nations before you.” (Deuternomy 18:9-12)
“Do not eat meat that has not been drained of its blood. "Do not practice fortune-telling or witchcraft.” (Leviticus 19:26)
“My child, regard not omens, for this leads to idolatry; neither be an enchanter, nor an astrologer, nor a magician, neither wish to see these things, for from them all is idolatry engendered. ” (Didache 3:4)
Scripture is implicit, magic in any form is deplorable in the sight of the Lord (Deuteronomy 18:12) and bears the penalty of the inferno (Revelation 21:8). So then why I ask, would we be at ease being entertained by sorcery? Since God the Trinity detests Pharmokios (magic), why would we then believe “its alright to like Gandalf the Wizard, to do a spell in Fable the Video Game, and even place in our homes objects associated with magic like the Tri-force of Zelda or Norse-Drudic runes on Middle-Earth weaponry replicas?”
Perhaps your rebuttal is, “to avoid all that would be to avoid the world.” Well the apostle tells us, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him,” (1 John 2:15). Christ tells us, “If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first. If you were of the world, it would love you as its own. Instead, the world hates you, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.” (John 15:18-20), “I have given them your word. And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world, My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one (prince of the world see John 14:30, John 12:31, John 16:11).” (John 17:14-15), and the apostle confirms, “We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one,” (1 John 5:19), and that prince is the ddvil, “n which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.” (Ephesians 2:2). It is the devil who is behind all sorcery and magic, because he knows God detests magic (Deuteronomy 18:12) and bears the penalty of hell (Revelation 21:8) if a person practices it.
So do as they did in Acts, casting their spell books in the fire (Acts 19:19) and choose to have nothing to do with magic which God hates (Deuteronomy 18:12, Revelation 21:8). Amen.
