The Holidays are upon us. During this time of year there are two celebrations that could not be more polar opposite. There is Halloween, which honors death and darkness, and Christmas which celebrates life and light. Halloween traditionally pays tribute to the devil and is an occult and ancient pagan solstice that involves human sacrifice (death). Christmas in stark contrast is the day we as Christians around the world celebrate the Birth (life) of Jesus Christ and involves honoring Him with light.
Halloween is a time when people erect ghouls, ghosts, and skeletons. Death permeates everywhere and the griminess of the season is found in grave stones. The object of Halloween is to dress up as favorite character and demand candy at the doors of strangers. If chocolate is not received, traditionally trick-o-treaters are sanctioned to play a trick on the house ranging from toilet paper to rotten eggs.
Christmas is the time when people erect trees, lights, and Nativities. Life permeates everywhere and the glory of the season is found in garland strings. The purpose of Christmas is to remember God coming into the World and to give gifts to those we love. Instead of demanding presents, people expect them from those they love and in turn shop to give their own. There are no tricks, just candle wicks and wonderful songs.
I have written about the origins of Halloween and how I do not endorse the holiday or encourage celebrating it due to It's Satanic and Pagan over and undertones. Halloween should be hollow in our hearts. As for Harvest Festivals, I find them be an acceptable alternative for believers. However, if Churches host a Harvest Festival they need to vet people at the barn, parking lot, or town. Children should feel protected and the evil of the holiday should be kept at bay.
Christmas has some pagan aspects. Santa Claus and his elves are Norse in origin. However, St. Nicholas is also an inspiration for Santa. I recommend if you intend to include Mr. Claus in your celebration, that you not let him dwarf the Son of God. Make Christmas about Christ and have Santa Claus be St. Nick the Side Kick. As for presents, I whole heartily believe gifts are in the nature of the holiday. For one the Wise Men gave Jesus the three gifts of Frankincense, Gold, and Myrrh. St. Nicholas as I have mentioned gave gifts to the poor in Turkey.
The point is that Christmas is a time of light! People display their different taste and passion for decoration! The lights wither white, colored, or other singular colors invites brings life to the dark nights! As for the tree, I stick with the German explanation: It is the evergreen tree and thus stands for eternal life in Christ and thus a fitting symbol to place in the home.
When Halloween and Christmas juxtaposed there is no confusion. Halloween is death, and Christmas life. As Christians we should be celebrating life and the Light of the World who is Jesus Christ! Halloween is a lie, it makes an earthly death and the dark spirits a focus. We shall indeed die, but death means to go to eternity and live forever with our Lord and Savior! Then a time shall come when we shall be resurrected and given a new body! Choose life!
