I have been reading about book called Byzantium and the Crusades by Jonathan Harris. In one chapter titled "Men of Iron" there is quote that inspired me. The Byzantines are approaching the Crusaders during the Fourth Crusade in robes of gold and adorned with precious gems. Their goal is to impress their Latin allies with their finery and assert their authority by spectacle. The Crusaders who have changed since 1095 respond, "It is time to put on iron and stop warring gold." (Citation available soon). What a profound statement! What if this was applied to the Church? Instead seeking to impress people with golden icons and lavish lodgings, we should put on iron. Iron is a metal that was used for arms and armor and for fortifications. It was strong and meant for war. We as Christians should clad ourselves in iron (metaphorically) to wage war against the devil and the desires of the flesh. We should not trust in gold, but instead take up irons and do battle with evil.
The Church has been lost in decadence and decay. We need to fight for the souls of the lost and "take the kingdom by force!" We should be on our knees in iron, before people in iron, and before God in iron! Enough with pride! Let us display the humbler cloak of iron and show the forces of darkness that we mean to fight! That we will not be content to worship Mammon and make caffs of gold! We will serve the Lord of Battles! Its time to stop perverting our purpose in this world with precious stones. Take up instead iron and defend your families and friends from the foes who seek to make them slaves to greed.
Let us become a Church of Iron, ready to due battle in the spirit against the devil. Let us put on the Armor of God and make ready for the day of battle! Our enemy is the devil. Gold will not protect us, but the iron of the Lord, the image of his protection will! Steel yourselves against sin and dip your spear and make it ready for the demonic spirits! What would a Church of Iron look like? A community of believers who's mission is to show love and to bare witness for the Kingdom of God. What if we put aside the golden domed cathedral and started caring for those in our Christian Family? What if instead of sitting in armament of precious stones we instead took a stand against the forces trying to destroy our families?
We cannot afford to become lukewarm. Gold makes men soft, but iron makes men tough! We need not what the world calls precious, but instead what God calls precious! So put on iron and make the devil think twice about attacking you and your family!
