Queen is a band that has remained famous. Most of us have heard their greatest hits like “We Will Rock You,” “We Are The Champions,” “Another One Bites The Dust,” and “Who Wants to live Forever?” What many may not know is that Freddy Mercury wrote and sang a song about Jesus on their first album in 1973.
Here is the Video:
Here is the Lyrics:
“And then I saw Him in the crowd
A lot of people had gathered round Him
The beggars shouted the lepers called Him
The old man said nothing
He just stared about him
All going down to see the Lord Jesus
All going down to see the Lord Jesus
All going down
Then came a man before His feet he fell
Unclean said the leper and rang his bell
Felt the palm of a hand touch his head
Go now go now you’re a new man instead
All going down to see the Lord Jesus
All going down to see the Lord Jesus
All going down
It all began with the three wise men
Followed a star took them to Bethlehem
And made it heard throughout the land
Born was a leader of man
All going down to see the Lord Jesus
All going down to see the Lord Jesus
All going down
It all began with the three wise men
Followed a star took them to Bethlehem
And made it heard throughout the land
Born was a leader of man
All going down to see the Lord Jesus
All going down to see the Lord Jesus
All going down.” -Queen
What is remarkable about this song isn’t just the catchy rhythm, but that the main line is “Go down to see the Lord Jesus.” Very few modern Christian worship songs call Jesus Lord, when Scripture tells us that to be saved we must call Jesus Lord, “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved,” (Romans 10:9), and that all will one-day confess Jesus is Lord, “and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:11).
I really think this song by Queen should be an anthem for Holy Week. That we should ring loud the bell and call Jesus Lord. I also think the mention of the Leper is the only time I’ve heard of lepers in a Christian song. It brings home that Christ wishes to touch and heal the untouchables: those abandoned and despised by society. Amen.
