In this age of over-saturation of information, we can be tempted to seek out knowledge on the internet. But knowledge (gnosis) is not always helpful, In fact it can be harmful, hence the evil Gnostic cultists. What matters is that we know Jesus, “And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you [ginosko, epignosko, intimacy], the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. ” (John 17:3). In fact, the apostle Paul urges us to count all lost but knowing Christ, “Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ,” (Philippians 3:8), he even says this a mature Christian view, “Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you. ” (Philippians 3:15). Knowledge (gnosis) can be very dangerous, especially secretive societies that promise mysteries. Jesus rebukes such synagogues, “But I also have a message for the rest of you in Thyatira who have not followed this false teaching (‘deeper truths,’ as they call them—depths of Satan, actually). I will ask nothing more of you ” (Revelation 2:24), and He did nothing in secret, “I have spoken openly to the world," Jesus replied. "I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.” (John 18:20).
A great trap the Church has fallen into is gnosis. We have pastors more concerned with their knowledge (gnosis) than people knowing Jesus Christ personally; knowing Jesus in a deep and personal relationship. Services have become about a minister’s learning at seminary (gnosis) rather than people knowing Jesus on Sunday morning through worship, revelations, hymns, gifts, and prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:25-31). The knowledge isn’t even secretive, the internet had become a tool for people to have access to all information, but is that good? We are suppose to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2), not the doctrines of demons (1 Timothy 4:1) and knowledge of the world. In fact we are exhorted, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them..” (1 John 2:15).
If you would have true knowledge and wisdom, it can only be found in knowing Jesus Christ in a personal intimacy, “Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:2-3).
The time is coming when we will have to decide. Do we want dead churches with pastors that have a lot of learning or do we want Churches were we know God the Trinity intimately, and allow His Spirit to arrive on Sunday? If God is not welcome at Sunday service, what is the point of the service? It is time we knew our God The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with a great intimacy of relationship. Amen.
