I've read The Parable of The Prodigal Son many times and heard the pontifications of preachers on the parable. The typical interpretation of the son who squanders his inheritance and ends up eating with the pigs is pretty straightforward. However, recently I discovered a different way of looking at this story. When we think of inheritance it usually equates to money or land. It is something of worth that our ancestor or in most cases father and mother has saved for us. So what is God's inheritance to man? Well according to Genesis, Terra Firma or Earth is our inheritance. The Almighty bequeathed us an entire planet to steward and subdue. However, I argue there is another inheritance that Our Father in Heaven has given his children. That inheritance is Time. God has given us seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, and years. We are allotted a specific number of these measurements of time and then we will die. What if the point of the Parable of the Prodigal Son isn't just that God will receive his rebellious son back, but a message to us about the true inheritance of time. The Prodigal spends his time squandering not only money, but his time amongst the pigs. What if Christ is trying to make us understand that we shouldn't be wasting our valuable time (inheritance) among the pigs (pernicious insidious greedy succubuses) and instead should return to our Heavenly Father and his household (Kingdom).
So many people are drowning in the mud of the pigs. They spend their time chasing swine when they could be serving their Savior. They boast that they are immortal and will become moral when It's more convenient. But time slips away and we aren't promised infinite days. The lesson I take away from the Prodigal Son isn't just the love and acceptance of our Heavenly Father, but that we must be mindful of how we spend God's Inheritance. He has placed us here on this planet for this point in time. I would rather not waste my inheritance, what about you?
