Eight days ago marked the Tenth Anniversary of Halo Combat Evolved. For some this is not significant, it is was merely another day in their lives. For me, it marks the anniversary of a long journey. Many have inquired of me what is so special about Halo. Isn't it just a game where you shoot aliens? In its crudest form yes, but then to use this description is to not do the series justice. Halo's Universe is vast, the narrative that has been spun for a decade is as elaborate as Tolkien's Middle Earth. The motives of the protagonists and antagonists are simple, but then again haven't they always been? Haven't the great tales of old been about good versus evil? Virtue vs vice? Why must we have Inception like stories for it to be deemed worthy? Halo is not just about a war between the human race and collective of alien races. It is not about a weapon world capable of destroying galaxies. It is about memories. I grew up on Halo, it was the staple of my youth. I clocked in countless hours with my friends and family. I have had complex conversations and deep debates over an Xbox controller and the hum of my console. Halo is more than a game, it is a conduit of joy. I have bonded with my nephew in the halls of Installation 04. I have cultivated relationships while blasting away with my MA5B. I recollect the times I laughed heartily, shouted nonesensities, and wept bitterly. The memories are still fresh in my faculties, I can recall them all. Like a blink it seems has a decade passed, and still to this day a man plays a game. Because that game is more than story, more than some fabled glory, it is a journey that shall never be forgotten. While some were partying and doing other questionable things, me and my buddies were fighting on a fictitious ring. There lies our legacy, there lies our memory.
